5 Common Furnace Issues and How to Deal With Them

5 Common Furnace Issues and How to Deal With Them

Even the most well-installed furnaces with the correct unit can be subject to malfunctioning. This is most commonly a result of poor maintenance, causing the furnace to perform less efficiently and wear out more quickly. In the worst-case scenario, a furnace in poor condition can expose you to carbon monoxide poisoning. Thus, it’s essential to know how to identify problems with your furnace and how to fix these issues. Here are five common furnace issues and how to deal with them:

Common Furnace Issues

Determine the problem

Wondering why your furnace is not working? Here are some common furnace problems, their causes, and how you can fix them:

#1 Not Producing Heat

If your furnace is not producing heat, open the heat registers and then check the settings of the thermostat. Next, check the furnace power, reset the furnace, or check the service door cover. Lastly, make sure the air filter is clear of dirt.

#2 Not Producing Enough Heat

Similarly, your furnace may just not be producing enough heat. If you see a decline in the heat output, make sure the air filter is clean and in good condition. After that, check the vents and ducts for clogging. Finally, make sure the thermostat is working correctly and is positioned in the right place. Move it away from direct sunlight, as this may cause the thermostat to misread the temperature in your house. Also, check your insulation to ensure that warm air doesn’t escape from your space through windows or doors.

#3 Strange Noises

Are your furnace or ducts making unusual noises? This could mean that there’s a problem with the mechanics, reduced airflow. If you hear rattling, for example, this could be a sign that your blower motor or blower may need attention. Banging noises could mean delayed ignition. As it can be tough to determine the cause of strange sounds without experience, call a furnace repair service to fix the issues.

#4 Running Continuously

If your furnace is constantly running, it may be dirty or clogged. Before trying to solve the issue, make sure the thermostat settings are not at “continuous fan” and the air filter looks good. If so, contact a furnace repair service for assistance.

#5 Not Blowing Air

If your furnace is not blowing air, check that your thermostat is at the correct temperature. Before cleaning the air filter, ensure that the furnace circuit breakers have a power supply. As usual, contact a technician if you still can’t fix the problem on your own.

Troubleshooting Furnace Issues

When in doubt, call the professionals

Whether you have a propane or natural gas furnace, there are a number of troubleshooting procedures you can try safely on your own to get your gas furnace up and running:

Check the Thermostat

Thermostats determine the ambient room temperature nearby, causing the furnace to switch on when temperatures drop below the levels set by the user. If the thermostat is placed near a space heater, stove, or other appliance that produces heat, remove the heat source and wait several minutes for the room temperature to stabilize before checking for furnace operation. Replace your thermostat’s batteries annually, as well as the batteries in sensor devices around your household, such as smoke detectors. Also, if your thermostat operates air conditioning as well, make sure it is set to “heat.”

Check The Electricity

Make sure the electricity switch and furnace’s circuit breaker switch are turned on. The electricity switch is usually near the furnace, while the breaker is in your house’s electrical panel. If your breaker switch turns off after resetting, this is a sign of a larger problem that must be fixed by a furnace repair service.
